Why session times matter

Trading activity in a market is usually heaviest when its home exchange is open, and around the open and the close. When two big centres are open together, such as London and New York, more participants are active at once. This page shows the regular hours of seven major exchanges converted into your own time, using each city’s daylight-saving rules for today’s date, so the table stays right when the clocks change.

  • Tokyo opens 09:00–15:30 Japan time with a lunch break from 11:30 to 12:30. Japan does not use daylight saving.
  • Mumbai (NSE and BSE) trades 09:15–15:30 India time, which is 03:45–10:00 UTC all year.
  • London trades 08:00–16:30 UK time; New York 09:30–16:00 Eastern time. Both move their clocks, on different dates.
  • Sydney trades 10:00–16:00 Sydney time; Australia’s summer time runs from October to April, the opposite of Europe and the US.

Worked example

A trader in Mumbai on 6 November 2026 wants the hours when both London and New York shares trade. New York opens at 09:30 Eastern Standard Time (14:30 UTC) and London closes at 16:30 GMT (16:30 UTC). In India time (UTC+5:30) that is 20:00 to 22:00. In July the same overlap is 19:00 to 21:00 India time, because both cities are on summer time.

Forex trades around the clock on weekdays, so it has no official open. Its busiest hours tend to follow these stock sessions, especially London and New York.

Frequently asked questions

Does 'Open' guarantee that my broker is accepting orders?

No. The table uses regular weekday hours and the time-zone rules in your browser. It does not know about holidays, early closes or trading halts, and your broker may have its own order cut-off times.

When is the London and New York session overlap?

The London Stock Exchange closes at 16:30 London time and the New York exchanges open at 09:30 New York time, so the shares overlap lasts two hours most of the year: 14:30–16:30 UTC in the northern winter and 13:30–15:30 UTC in summer. For a few weeks in March and October–November, when only one side has changed its clocks, it is one hour longer.
